A work permit is a document issued by the Canadian government that allows a foreign national to work in Canada for a specified period. IEC allows young people from participating countries to work in Canada temporarily. It includes three categories:

  • Working Holiday
  • Young Professionals
  • International Co-op (Internship)
Types of work permits available in Canada
  • Open Work Permit: Allows the holder to work for any Canadian employer for a specific period of time.
  • Employer-Specific Work Permit: Restricts the holder from working for other employers other than the specific employer who made the job offer.
  • Intra-Company Transfers: Enables employees of multinational companies to work in Canada for a designated period.

The process of obtaining a work permit can take several weeks or months and involves submitting an application, paying a fee, undergoing a medical examination and security clearance.
